Question

If I don't know my 12 year old sons SS#, will I still get the child tax credit?

No.  If you don't include the child's SSN, you can't list them as a dependent.  (You may get the $500 "other dependent" credit, but the missing SSN will still show up as an error and may block e-filing.)

Why don't you know the SSN?  You will need to visit the social security administration office near you, or maybe talk to the other parent or their attorney if this is a custody matter.

For children in the middle of an adoption, there is a way for the foster parents (pending adoption) to get a replacement temporary number.
