IRS Refund error

Hello,

I submitted my 1040-X, and the IRS made an error by refunding $4,000 instead of $1,000. They sent a check for $4,000, but due to a postal issue, I did not receive the check. In the meantime, the IRS corrected my return, adjusting the refund to $1,000. Now, they are asking me to refund the $3,000 difference before January 10th to avoid penalties and interest.

However, I never received the $4,000 check due to the postal issue.

I have already submitted Form 3911 to trace the check.

Could anyone advise me on what I should do next? Should I pay the $3,000 to the IRS even though I never received the check, or should I wait for a response to the Form 3911?

@sundargba123 you have done all the right things.  Sit tight.  Once they trace that the check was not cashed (or not endorsed by you), they will adjust your balance.
