To be eligible for the child tax credit you must have at least $2,500 of taxable income from work for the year.

Social Security benefits received are not taxable income from work.

There was an "Ask the Experts" event earlier today for questions about child tax credit and the childcare credit.   But you are welcome to post questions here in the user forum 24/7.   As for child-related credits like the refundable additional child tax credit or child care credit, earned income credit....you must have income from working to be eligible for those credits.  There has only been one tax year---2021--- for which you could receive the child tax credit even if you did not work.  The tax law changed for 2022 and 2023, so unless you have income from working you are not eligible for child-related refundable credits.
