Look on Line 12 of your 1040 and see if you are receiving the standard deduction amount.

Single $12,400

Married filing jointly & surviving spouse $24,800

Married filing separately $12,400

Head of household $18,650

If any other amount appears, then you are receiving an itemized deduction. If receiving the standard deduction amount listed above, ignore the Schedule A. However, if you are itemizing (and didn't know it), the Schedule A is relevant in your return.

if you are receiving an itemized deduction that is lower than your standard deduction, you may have accidently indicated in your return that you wish to claim itemized deductions.
