If I had to travel out of town for medical, what do I deduct (and does the deduction fall under the $10,189)?

I had airfare, hotel, meals, taxi/shuttle, baggage.  I assume I can't deduct the meals?

For another trip I drove and so could deduct milage, hotel, parking?

The IRS allows you to deduct unreimbursed expenses for preventative care, treatment, surgeries, and dental and vision care as qualifying medical expenses. You can also deduct unreimbursed expenses for visits to psychologists and psychiatrists. Unreimbursed payments for prescription medications and appliances such as glasses, contacts, false teeth and hearing aids are also deductible.

One of the most important things to know about deducting medical expenses is you have to itemize deductions on Schedule A to receive a tax benefit.

The IRS also lets you deduct the expenses that you pay to travel for medical care, such as mileage on your car, bus fare and parking fees.

Transportation and travel costs are generally deductible as a medical expense if they're needed to reach a medical treatment facility.

    • Travel and lodging – Mileage (17 cents per mile), taxi fare, bus, or ambulance transportation for traveling to see a doctor or specialist is deductible. You may also deduct airfare if required to see a doctor outside of your area.  Staying at a hotel or motel while receiving outpatient medical treatment is deductible if the primary reason for the visit is for medical care. The deduction is $50 per night per person.

You can deduct the cost of meals at a hospital or similar facility if a main reason for being there is to get medical care. You can't include in medical expenses the cost of meals that aren't part of inpatient care
