In 2019 we were in process of moving to Wa state. My wife had already moved, I was finalizing house sale in Ca.  I ended up in hospital because of an accident and my wife had to fly down to CA and see me in hospital. Is her airfare tax deductible? How about my airfare expenses back to Wa state, 5 weeks later when I was discharged. My wife had to come down to check me out and accompany me back to Wa. I could not be transported in vehicle when discharged?

    The travel expenses you described would not be considered a medical deduction.  Here are the circumstances outlined by the IRS for travel expenses to be a medical deduction:

    You can include in medical expenses amounts paid for transportation primarily for, and essential to, medical care.

    • Bus, taxi, train, or plane fares or ambulance service;

    • Transportation expenses of a parent who must go with a child who needs medical care;

    • Transportation expenses of a nurse or other person who can give injections, medications, or other treatment required by a patient who is traveling to get medical care and is unable to travel alone; and

    • Transportation expenses for regular visits to see a mentally ill dependent, if these visits are recommended as a part of treatment.
