Medicare Insurance Premiums

Ref: Turbo Tax Home & Business 2022 Filing joint return, with self-employment income.

In the Retirement/Social Security question TT asks how much of our SS was for Medicare Premiums. I entered that figure (can’t remember this question in previous years). But, I also included those premiums in the Health Care Insurance Premiums section under Business expenses. Did I duplicate this deduction?

The instructions in the self-employed section of TurboTax state to enter the Medicare Premiums just in the business section if you are taking a self-employed health insurance deduction.

This will help you avoid taking an itemized deduction for the same premiums.

You can go back to your SSA-1099 entries and remove the Medicare premiums by selecting the following:

    • Federal
    • Income
    • Show More next to Retirement Income
    • Revisit next to 1099-SSA
    • then remove the numbers for your Medicare Premiums and leave blank.

I have not duplicated this premium in my federal return. I'm concerned as to whether entering the premium on my federal return carries over into the Pennsylvania state return in some fashion so that using a pro-rated portion of it in my PA return Home Office Expense calculation is a duplication within the state return.

The Pennsylvania home office calculation is for workers who are working from home while earning W2 income.  It is not for self-employed individuals who have already taken a home office deduction on their federal returns.  If you have already taken the home office deduction on your federal return it has also been taken on your state return by reducing your taxable self-employment income.  Do not attempt to take the home office deduction a second time.
