Question

My 1098 for my HELOC doesn't contain the amount in box 2, Outstanding Mortgage principal. Ideas?

If the HELOC was used for anything other than adding to the home (such as remodeling or an addition) the interest won't be allowed as a deduction, so you needn't enter the 1098.

 

If you DID use it to upgrade the house you took the loan against, enter the loan amount in box 2.
