First, click here to determine the requirements to deduct home office expense. Then you must determine if the work on your home is a repair or capital item, click here for the revised IRS repair regulations to assist you with in this determination.

You are allowed to deduct a percentage of the repair items and for items you capitalize you depreciate and claim a percentage of the depreciation.

Click here for a Turbotax article which includes how to calculate the business percentage of home office use.
