Question

My child did not turn 18 until after 2024. Why do I not get the Maximum tax credit for 2024 if he did not turn 18 until 2025?

You lose the child tax credit when the child turns 17.   When they are older than 16, you get the $500 credit for other dependents instead of the child tax credit.

The child tax credit reduces when the child turns 17.  The credit for $2,000 is for children under the age of 17 and the modified adjusted gross income is less than $400,000 for Married Filing Joint or $200,000 for other filing statuses.  When the child is 17 or older the credit reduces to $500.
