Question

My parents paid more than half my living expenses, but that's it. Can they claim me as a dependent?

I lived with them for only 3 months last year, but they pay for my rent at my current apartment. Can they still claim me as a dependent this year?

Your age?  Are you a full time student?  Did you make more than $4,300 total income?

Here are the rules for claiming a dependent.  Do you qualify as a dependent?

I'm 20, and a full-time student. I made more than $4,300 total income.

I meet all those requirements except I only lived with them for 1/4 of the year.

Please be aware, being away at college is still considered living with parents if the child is under 24 and is a full-time student. It seems as if you meet the requirements to be your parents dependent as a Qualifying Child.

"The child is considered to have lived with the taxpayer during periods of time when either the child or the taxpayer is temporarily absent due to illness, education, business, vacation, military service, institutionalized care for a child who is permanently and totally disabled, or incarceration." (IRS Pub 17 Temporary absences page 29)
