Question

My tax return is refusing to accept my mortgage interest deduction, although it is entered. How can I rectify this?

I fully qualify, and my mortgage interest is less than last year, which was higher, as was my taxable income.  Why does it not accept my mortgage interest deduction?

Your mortgage interest will not be deducted if your standard deduction is greater than the total of your itemized deductions. TurboTax will automatically deduct whichever is more beneficial for you. 

 

To confirm this, please open your return and follow these steps in TurboTax:

  1. Click on Federal on the left hand side.
  2. Click Deductions & Credits on the top of the page.
  3. Scroll down and click on Wrap up tax breaks.
  4. TurboTax will inform you what is best for you.
