Question

On my tax return what form do I use for temporary assignment housing in adjacent state?

My wife and I are Nevada residents.  After the pandemic, she was asked to become a traveling nurse to help in California due to a shortage of nurses.  She was only needed 3-4 days a week, so we rented an apartment in California near her work and traveled back and forth as needed.  Where on my tax return would I enter this temporary assignment housing cost?  Which form, please.

Thank you,

If your wife is a W2 employee, unfortunately her housing expenses would not be deductible.  If she was an independent contractor, she could deduct the expenses on her Schedule C as Travel Expenses.  See Business travel expenses.  You would have to make sure the work assignment was "temporary" (expected to last for less than one year) to qualify.

You may be able to deduct the housing as Job Related expenses for the California nonresident return- you can add in the federal section of TurboTax and it will transfer to the state.  @Mike2025
