Question

Our family HSA, MSA Contributions # for 2018 was 3700. We've basically contributed the same this year, but the # is listed as 0 for 2019. Can you explain why? THanks!

There are two types of HSA contributions (I assume that you have an HSA, not the less common MSA):

  • The "employer" contribution (the sum of what your employer contributes PLUS what you contribute by payroll deduction)
  • Any "personal" contributions that you made directly to the HSA, not through your employer

These contributions are reported in different ways. On the HSA Summary screen (I assume that this is the screen you are referring to), there are

  • Deductions
  • Tax-free employer contributions

Deductions - The amount of "personal" contributions you made - these are contributions made OUTSIDE your employer - not through payroll deduction. This amount appears on line 25 of Schedule 1 (Form 1040) and on line 2 on form 8889. Exception: If you carried over excess contributions from the previous year and this excess was successfully charged off against the current year contribution limit, then the amount of the carryover is added to line 25; however, because it is a carryover and not a current year contribution, it does not appear on line 2 of form 8889.

Tax-free employer contributions -The amount on your W-2 in box 12 with code "W". This is the sum of your employer's contributions AND your contributions by means of payroll deduction. No part of this amount should be included in “Deductions above”.

If you are not referring to the HSA Summary screen, please come back and tell us where you are looking. Remember that we in the Community cannot see your tax return nor the screen you are on.
