My daughter just used turbotax to complete her first tax filing. She earned $2700 in 2024 but the standard deduction is $3,215, so she should not owe any tax, but the software is telling her that she owes $2. Is this an error or does she really owe the IRS?

@reginayang the software is normally correct.  To answer your question, more information is required.

what is on the following lines of form 1040: Line 15 and each line from Line 16-24.

does she have any unearned income (dividend, interest, etc?) that exceeds $1300?

If  her $2700 work income was reported on a form 1099, rather than a W-2, there will be self employment tax on line 24 (form 1040). This is separate from income tax (line16).

"Self employment tax" (SET) is how you pay social security & Medicare tax, on earned income when none was withheld. SET is due even if you do not have enough income to have to pay any income tax. The threshold for having to file a tax return, when you have a 1099 is a mere $400.
