Question

Paid $5,922. Student Loan interest in 2017, but permitted only to deduct $2,500 on 1040; may we deduct another $2,500 in 2018 (& perhaps the remainder in 2019)? Thanks

Paid a $5,922. Naviant Student (Unsubsidized) Loan interest in 2017, but permitted only to deduct $2,500 on 1040; may we deduct another $2,500 now in 2018 (& perhaps the remainder in 2019)?  Plus paid a $276. Naviant Student (Subsidized) Loan interest in 2018 which we would want to deduct, if not in 2018, then in 2019...can we do that?  Got1098E's for both yrs.Thanks.

Unfortunately, you can only deduct student loan interest paid during the tax year.

You can't carry over any interest that was paid in one tax year, but not deductible because of the $2,500 limitation.
