Question

Paid Family Leave

I received a 1099 Misc for Paid Family Leave, box 3 other income. I was allowed to take off from work to help out with the new born baby.  The program takes me to Schedule C which seems strange. why should I be filling out a Schedule C & paying S.S. taxes on this.

I realize I have to pay Federal & State taxes but shouldn't that be all I'm paying?

How do I treat this or get around it?

Typically Paid Family Medical Leave is reported on a 1099-G and not a 1099-MISC.  Unemployment compensation and paid family leave are entered in the same place:

Open or continue your tax return.

    1. Search for 1099-G and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results.
    2. On the Did you receive unemployment or paid family leave benefits in 2022? Screen, answer Yes.
    3. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your 1099-G information.

If you have a 1099-MISC instead of a 1099-G, the income may not be paid for family leave and should be reported elsewhere.  Typically, companies that offer paid medical leave or disability do so through a third-party insurer. You may receive a separate W-2 from that insurer to report the PFL income, or you may see the PFL reported as third-party sick pay on your regular, company-issued W-2.  If the form is a 1099-MISC, I would contact the issuer to verify the income they are reporting is correct.
