I click on the personal property tax entry and I get a blank page that just sits there.

What do I do?

Are you trying to enter real estate taxes rather than personal property taxes?

Real estate taxes and personal property taxes are part of itemized deductions. Both are part of the state and local tax deduction, which is capped at $10,000.

To enter these deductions:

  • Under the Federal menu, choose Deductions & Credits
  • For real estate taxes, expand the menu for Your Home
  • If the taxes are reported on a 1098, click Start/Revisit next to Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098). Enter the information on the screens that follow.
  • If the taxes are not part of a 1098, click Start/Revisit next to Property (Real Estate) Taxes. Enter the information on the screens that follow.
  • Be careful not to enter the same taxes on both screens.
  • For personal property taxes, expand the menu for Cars and Other Things You Own.
  • Click Start/Revisit next to Personal Property Taxes. Enter the information on the screens that follow.

I submitted an online property tax payment with my local county on 1/1/22.  On the county website, the payment is being shown as being paid on 12/31/21 due to the holiday.  I talked to the county treasurer tax supervisor and this was their response:

“All payments made on our website on December 31st thru January 3rd were posted with a December 31stposting date. This is because our office was closed on December 31st and we have to allow payments that are due December 31st to be paid timely.”

Should I report this property tax payment in 2021 or 2022?

Thanks for the assistance!

If you receipt is stamped Dec 31, 2021 then you should use it for your 2021 tax return. An audit would show Dec 31 so that is IRS expectation.
