Question

Primary or second home for property I lived in slightly less than half of year then rented out full time? I refinanced so have 2 1098s that match the timing.

Do I select primary home for 1098 that matches when I lived there, or is it a second home because I lived in it for almost half of the year? Or since the 2nd 1098 is for a rental property do both 1098s need to be listed as investment properties?

To verify, you received a Form 1098 that covers only the time when you lived in the home and then a second Form 1098 that covers only the time after it was converted to a rental property?

If yes, then you can select primary home for the Form 1098that covers only the time when you lived in the home. Please see Can I deduct my mortgage? for additional information.

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1098”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1098”

The second Form 1098 that covers only the time after it was converted to a rental property you will enter in the rental section:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “rental property”
  3. Click on “Jump to rental property”
