Residential energy credits

Signed contract with downpayment 9/9/2024 for large solar array.  Install construction did not start until 2nd week of January 2025.  Invoiced for remaining cost on 1/16/2025 even though there were a few additional construction issues due to bad weather.  Made final payment on 2/19/2025.  Enabled system on 2/22/2025 after power company meter replacement.  Vendor says I can apply for credits in 2024; however, logic says that I should file in 2025.  NY State form requires enable date be entered.  What if with all of the commotion in Washington, could the credit program be cancelled this year?

You can only claim the solar credit in the year your solar equipment is placed in service.

As the law stands now, the 30% solar credit is applicable until 2032.

Please read this IRS document for more information.
