Retirement Savings Contribution Credit Deduction and Turbo Tax Deluxe

Hello everyone,

I am attempting to complete a free filing of my 2019 taxes. During the deductions setting, it turned out that I had contributed to a retirement fund during certain months, so I qualify for the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit deduction. This deduction however is only available for TurboTax Deluxe owners, which in my state would cost me $110. The deduction is only $93, so I would be fine with skipping the deduction.

For some unknown reason, I cannot delete this deduction. There is a post about this in these forums linked here: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/retirement/discussion/i-don-t-want-to-file-schedule-3-nonrefundable-credits-for-my-401k-it-only-makes-me-pay-without-benef/00/290673#M24901

Their solution is to claim that you were a full time student to "get around this." I was not a full time student in 2019, so I do not want to put this down. This also decreases my refund by around 200$. I am not trying to "get around" anything by putting incorrect information on my taxes. Why does TurboTax do this seemingly obviously dishonest business practice of making you pay for a deduction? If I would have known I would need to pay for a deluxe edition, I would not have gone and put in that information for the deduction. All I was doing was going through the steps one by one, answering everything 100% correctly.

All I would like to do is delete the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit Deduction without falsely claiming that I was a full time student.  Can anyone help me please?

If you are eligible use the TurboTax Free File Program.

Use the TurboTax Free File program if you are eligible - https://freefile.intuit.com/
If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $36,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2019 AGI of $69,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).
