Question

Roth IRA Excess Contributions, but I don't have a Roth IRA

I'm trying to finish my taxes, but on the review before filing, I keep getting sent back to an error message that says to check the entry on IRA Contributions Worksheet: Line 26 - Taxpayer's excess Roth IRA contribution credit should be equal to $470, but neither me nor my spouse have a Roth IRA, so we have $0.  I did incorrectly but my Roth 401k amount in as a Roth IRA for 2023, but I have since amended that return to correct, although it has not been accepted yet.  Is there a way to e-file 2024 without that amount, or will I have to wait for the 2023 amended to be accepted? Or is there something else I need to change?

Yes, since you didn't have an excess contribution for 2023, you can remove that carried over entry and go ahead and e-file your return.

    • Okay, my amended return was accepted, but it keeps kicking me back to that screen on my current return as an error & won't let me file. How can I get it to clear the error?
