Hi,

My husband lived in Washington all 2019, and I lived in Iowa all 2019. We are filing married jointly with itemized deductible.

We want to claim sales tax instead of income tax so that we can reduce Iowa income tax. Iowa schedule A itemized deduction.

Turbotax only allow me to choose either WA or IA for a household of 2 when filling out the tax and interest deduction worksheet section 1b. Which state should I choose?

What amount should I put on the Iowa itemized deduction?

If i had to choose, I would choose the state that has the highest sales taxes. Here is a link to reference Iowa Sales Tax information.  for Washington,  state sales tax rate in Washington is 6.500%. With local taxes, the total sales tax rate is between 7.000% and 10.500%.  Here is a link, that will give you a City tax rate. To get the total sales tax you would add 6.5 + the city rate to get the total tax rate. You would do the same for Iowa.
