Should Form 1040 line 10b be blank? I made charitable contributions and took the standard deduction, but the final review says "charitable contributions should be blank"

When going through federal deductions, the page "Any Charitable Cash Contributions" says that I can deduct up to $300 for cash donations even when taking the standard deduction. When I do my final review, this gets flagged for review and I'm told this field has to be blank.

This is a known bug and has been reported.  Remove the amount as requested.

Go to the Charitable Donations section under Deductions & Credits to enter the $300 cash donation.  This will correct the problem.

To enter charitable donations -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Charitable Donations
  • On Donations to Charity in 2020, click on the start or update button

Or enter charitable donation in the Search box located in the upper right of the online program screen. Click on Jump to charitable donation

I am using the TurboTax Premier desktop edition for 2020 and if I enter a $300 Cash contribution in the Charitable Donations section and I am only getting the Standard Deduction, the amount is entered on the Form 1040 Line 10b with no error reported in Federal Review.

Make sure that your software is updated with the latest release.  Click on Online and then click on Check for Updates.

This is a known issue that is now resolved.

Here are the steps I recommend that you follow to have the $300 appear in Form 1040, Box 10b:

  1. Click Deductions and Credits
  2. Select Review/Edit
  3. Click Edit to the right of Standard Deduction
  4. Click OK, Sounds Good
  5. Click Wrap Up Tax Breaks
  6. Click Continue
  7. Make sure that $300 is filled in and then click Continue
  8. Click Lets Keep Going
  9. Now go to the 1040 Preview and your $300 should be on Line 10b.

This issue has not been resolved for me. I have the desktop version for Home Business and I have made sure my software is up to date as well.

I am not sure what they are telling me.  It asks one place what my contributions were.  If I take the standard deduction, what do I put in 10b

My understanding is that 1040 Line 10b is reserved for those taking the standard deduction (most everyone,  now that it has been raised so much!). Prior to 2020, only those claiming itemized deductions could declare charitable contributions. In 2020, if you made up to $300 in charitable contributions (legit and accepted by the IRS, of course) you can declare that amount; anything over $300 and you are limited to that $300 figure ($300 if single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er); $300 if married filing jointly; or $150 if married filing separately. So in my case my wife and I (joint return) gave way more than $300 to charities in 2020 but we only can declare $300, which I entered on line 10b. This is the FIRST TIME in decades that I do not have enough to claim itemized deductions, due to the new standard deduction amounts and extra deductions for my wife and I who are over 65! If you did not give to any charities last year and/or the box between 10a and 10b is blank, then line 10b should be blank. Is this your case?

Line 10b has $300 in it even though I am itemizing. I need to get rid of it. How?

February 14, 2021

Did you perform a final review to confirm that it may be better for you to take the standard deduction? I thought that I was going to be able to itemize, but the final review proved the opposite! Due to the changes in the tax laws and all of my deductions for 2020, as it turns out this is the first time in decades that the standard deduction saves me more than itemizing--check it out!!

No, you cannot use TurboTax Basic to obtain the $300 adjustment for charitable contributions.

This amount is reported on Schedule 1, and then pulled into your Form 1040.

Schedule 1 is used to report any adjustments to your income and includes items like the charitable contribution adjustment allowed by the Cares Act, as well taxable refunds, alimony, or business income just to name a few.

Schedule 1 is not included in the Basic version.

So, Your software is broken!

So many of the auto fill entries do not give me a clue as to where the value came from. This is one of the many flagged entries I received when I tried to check my return.

At least if you showed me where the entry was obtained fro, I may have a clue where the error was, yours or mine!!!!!

I cannot get TurboTax to accept cash contribution allowed under the CARES Act when using the standard deduction. Why is this so hard to accomplish?  How do I fix this glitch?
