Should I deduct for the year in which the trip occurred (2017) or when I paid the expenses (2016)? I went on a charitable medical trip with a 501(c)(3) organization.

I went on a charitable medical trip with a 501(c)(3) organization the first week of January 2017. I donated toward the trip & paid airfare in 2016. I have a letter from the org confirming the trip was for service with the dates in 2017.

Deduct your volunteer expenses in the year paid, 2016.

To enter your volunteer expenses into TurboTax:

  • Type in charitable contributions in the search box, top right of your screen, then click the magnifying glass

  • Click the jump to charitable contributions link in the search results.

  • Follow the onscreen instructions to enter

Note: Unless you have enough itemized deductions (ie. Medical mortgage interest, property taxes, charitable giving, ect) to exceed your Standard Deduction, you will not benefit from this expense,
