Question

Should the home energy credit be $345, not $0. We have not used this credit. This is not correct.

This can sometimes happen if your tax liability is $0 since the home energy credit is non-refundable.  If you have no tax liability, or other credits have already reduced it, the credit will carry forward to the next tax year.  Here is how to check to see if this is the case for you:

  1. Log in to your tax return at TurboTax.com.
  2. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen (you may need to click on Continue in the center first).
  3. Click on Tools.
  4. In the box that pops up in the center, click on View Tax Summary.

On the Tax Summary, look for your "Total Tax"  - if this is $0, then your credit will carry forward to the next year.  If this is not the case, please let us know, and we can continue to assist with troubleshooting.  (Additional note:  If you have self-employment tax (listed above total tax), you may still see a number other than $0 here.  The credit cannot reduce self-employment tax.)
