Question

Should we add both numbers on our 1098- box 10? There is both tax escrow and hazard insurance?

No. Box 10 is informational and dedicated for anything that the issuer wants to report to you. It does not necessarily include deductible expenses.

For a personal home, homeowner's insurance including hazard insurance is a personal expense and is not deductible. However, hazard insurance premiums are deductible on Schedule E when you have a rental property.

In addition, the amount paid into escrow is also not deductible. Only the deductible expenses that are paid from escrow, such as property taxes, are deductible.

Generally, the IRS only allows homeowners to deduct the following expenses as itemized deductions on Schedule A:

  • Loan origination fees
  • Points purchased
  • Mortgage interest expense
  • Mortgage insurance premiums
  • Real estate taxes
