Are you confusing the child tax credit with the child and dependent care credit?

Did you pay someone to take care of your child so you could work?  If so, you may be able to use the child and dependent care credit; you will need to enter the tax ID or Social Security number of the childcare provider that you paid to take care of your child.

If you did not pay a childcare provider and you got into that section by mistake, you need to get rid of the form.

Or are you asking about the child tax credit-----that is a different child-related credit available to parents who have income earned from working.
