my vehicle mileage deduction is not being applied to my return is it because I’m taking the standard deduction? Usually the mileage makes a huge difference in my return.

There are some possible things that could affect this.

    • You cannot deduct mileage expenses as a W-2 employee
      • Miscellaneous, unreimbursed employee expenses are no longer tax deductible.
      • This deduction is not allowed since 2022.
    • You serve in the U.S. armed forces
      • You have a choice to Itemize, or take a Standard deduction.
        • The mileage deduction is included if you itemize.
        • TurboTax calculates both and post the one that is to your best advantage.
        • If you haven't completed your tax return, you may have additional Itemized deductions to go with the mileage.
    • You are self employed.  This should not affect your return
      • You can choose between two methods of accounting for the business mileage deduction amount: In both cases you must keep a log of your miles driven for business.
      • The standard mileage deduction
      • If using standard mileage, it must be chosen in the first year the vehicle is in service
      • The Actual Expense Method requires the mileage log plus details of all expenses.  This includes fuel, repairs, oil changes, tires, etc.
