State/Local Income/Sales tax

How does Turbotax calculate State and Local Income/Sales Taxes?  When I ask for breakdown of my itemized deductions, that figure shows as $749.  I paid $420 in state income tax this year, and have no local income tax.  (The sales tax chart comes to $451.)  So where does the 749 come from?

TurboTax calculates sales tax based on your sales tax rate inputted. Please ensure that this rate is accurate.

To edit your sales tax rate, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open or continue your return
  2. Search for sales tax and select the Jump to link in the search results
  3. When asked how you want to enter your sales tax info:
    • Choose EasyGuide if you want us to walk you through
  4. On the screen Places You've Lived, please ensure that the state, start date, and sales tax rate are correct.

If you edit the sales tax rate, please make sure you enter the combined total state and local sales tax rate you paid. This percentage is a combined total of the two tax rates (state and local). For example - if your state sales tax rate is 6% and your local sales tax rate was 2%, you would enter 8%.

For more information, please see How do I find my local sales tax?
