My parents file jointly. My mother passed away January 10, 2020. My dad returned the $1200.00 stimulus check for my mother but Turbo Tax is saying that he gets that money plus the $600.00 recent stimulus amount as a return. His only income is social security.

Why is he getting money back for my mother?

    I'm sorry for your loss.

There is not a mechanism on the tax return to handle a deceased taxpayer at this time with regard to the stimulus payment. It is not clear if the IRS requires you to return stimulus checks paid to a deceased taxpayer. However, you do indicate on the tax return that the taxpayer is deceased, so the IRS should process the tax return with that information in mind, and adjust your tax return and tax due or refund accordingly if necessary.
