Tattoo Artist Tax Question

My husband is a tattoo artist and makes 60% off each tattoo and the shop takes 40% of that, can we deduct 40%? The shop buys some supplies with that money, so I don't know if that would be something we could do? He is an independent contractor. Also never receives a 1099. Thanks!

You can deduct the 40%, but only if you also report it as income on Schedule C.  If you are only reporting the 60% he receives for each tattoo, you cannot deduct the 40%, because he never received it.

This is what we did and it worked! We deducted under line 20b.

Thank you!

What forms should you file as a self employed tattoo artist?

Is you are self-employed, you would file your income and expenses on a Schedule C. This article, Know Your Tax Lingo: Self Employed & Gig Workers, along with the links at the bottom of the article will be helpful to you.
