Question

Tax Year Prior to 2020: My federal refund shows that it has been approved for direct deposit. However, there is a message down at the bottom stating that there could be an offset. What is this?

An offset is when the IRS and/or your states takes your refund to apply to past due debts such as back taxes, student loans, or child support. They will take your entire refund amount, apply it to the debt and then either send you a check for the balance left over, or a bill for the remaining balance due.

To inquire about a possible offset please call 800-304-3107. They can advise you what the offset is for and how much it is for.
