How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed

An amended return has to be filed on a special form, Form 1040X. It cannot be e-filed. You have to print it, sign it, and file it by mail. Mail each year in a separate envelope. It takes the IRS up to 16 weeks to process an amended return.

It's too late to get a refund for 2015 unless you filed an extension for your 2015 tax return. If your 2015 amended return shows a refund, you will not get the refund. If you filed an extension by April 15, 2016, you can get a refund for 2015 until October 15, 2019.
