The child tax credit is $2000 per child. I have two kids, then why is Turbotax showing "The $2,000 Child Tax Credit and $500 Credit for Other Dependents"?

Have read and re-red qualifications for claiming child tax credit. I've inputted the information correctly with SSN's, dates of birth, neither working, living full time in my home (ages 14 & 16). Yet Turbotax refuses to give the older child the $2000 credit, but rather classifies him only eligible for the $500!?

Once in a while (especially when an answer is changed) TurboTax will get an answer "stuck" that can cause an error. This may be the case here if your son was 16 as of 12/31/23.

Make a note of your child's Social Security number, and then delete him from the return and re-enter. As you go back through be sure to make those entries again - live with you all year, did NOT provide more than half of his own support, and that no one else lived in the home that supported him.

This is exactly what happened...the TurboTax software did not compute one of my sons updated social security change from an ITIN. I had to remove hi, from my records, then re-add him for the software to include the addition $1500 missing.

Unfortunately I had already filed just this morning....can I amend my return through TurboTax with this corrected adjustment?

Yes, you can amend the return. However, you should wait a little while for the return to be accepted and for the return to be processed. Ideally, it is best to wait until you have actually received your refund. This is so that if the IRS makes any adjustments to your return, you can account for them in the amendment.

Check the date of birth you entered. Check to make sure you said the child has a Social Security number valid for employment. Check how you answered that oddly worded question that asks if the child paid for over half their own support. If the child was younger than 17 at the end of 2023, then you should be getting the child tax credit for that child. If they turned 17 in 2023, even on December 31, you get the $500 credit instead.
