Tool deduction help. i spent 2400 dollars on tools for my job this year. hand tools , video and thermal imaging devices. should i deduct full amount?

Yes, as a miscellaneous itemized deduction, if they were not reimbursed to you by your employer.  Generally, these expenses are deducted on Schedule A (Form 1040), line 21, or Schedule A (Form 1040NR), line 7.  In TurboTax, you can deduct these under Job Expenses - W-2 which is located under Employment Expenses (Deductions and Credits).

You can deduct only unreimbursed employee expenses that are:

  • Paid or incurred during your tax year,

  • For carrying on your trade or business of being an employee, and

  • Ordinary and necessary.

An expense is ordinary if it is common and accepted in your trade, business, or profession. An expense is necessary if it is appropriate and helpful to your business. An expense doesn't have to be required to be considered necessary.

But you can only deduct the amount OVER 2% of your AGI. And then all your itemized deductions have to be more than the Standard Deduction to be used.
