Question

TT is recommending I itemize deductions which lowers the amount I owe, but it's not using the itemized option. I have tried to change it and it's not taking. What gives?

The software recommends I itemize but yet after the final checks it's showing the standard deduction. I have tried to change it to itemized over and over but it's not taking the change.

Are you filing a separate return from your spouse ?

No. I am single and filing single. I am just now seeing something about a $300 charitable deduction or something that may be affecting the return? Trying to read up on what that is, because my standard deduction is $12,400 but itemized would have been $12,621. I did have $474 in charitable deductions last year.

You're on the right track.  The CARES Act allows for those who utilize the standard deduction to make a cash charitable donation up to $300 & claim it as an above the line deduction.  Meaning you don't have to itemize to take it.

I suspect what is happening with TT is that it is recognizing that that it would be better for you take the standard deduction vs the itemizing because the standard deduction plus the $300 charitable cash contribution is higher than your itemized total of $12,621.

Hope this helps.
