Turbo Tax Home & Business math error in "Other Income Taxes" under "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Turbo tax is inflating the amount listed for state taxes paid by $131K.  It shows a line item with all the taxes paid called "State mandatory taxes."  This is listed r ight below all the other withholdings such as "Federal, State, Local."   I have confirmed it shows all our W-2s correctly and those are flowing thru to each of these withholding lines correctly.  But this is concerning.  Does anyone know where this line is coming from?

Thank you for sending the token.  I was able to find the source of the issue.  On the W-2 for your spouse, the wages are entered as a tax in Box 14 and this line should be removed.  It's listed with the description of "Oregon Statewide Transit Tax" which is why it's picking it up and overstating the taxes.  Either remove this entry entirely or update the description from Oregon Statewide Transit Tax to "Other, not classified" and that will remove the number from other state mandatory taxes.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.  To avoid TurboTax removing the number as potential personal info, please post a screenshot if possible.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

Hello Susan.  I am just circling back on this.  I did send the file but maybe I didn't do it correctly.  Here is the token number.

If you are looking at a review or summary screen those add in other kinds of taxes paid too.  Make sure your actual 1040 return is right.

Other taxes could be any of the following:

Self-Employment tax

Unreported SS & Medicare tax

10% Early Distribution of Retirement plans penalty

Advance EIC from W-2

Household Employment tax

Etc.

Like some could be for State and local taxes paid...

-any state withholding from your paychecks, retirement checks, unemployment checks, etc.

-a state tax due (for any year) you paid last year

-any state estimated tax payments you made during year including an overpayment applied from last year

-any local taxes withheld on your checks like SDI in box 14 or 19 on your W2
