Question

I am perplexed and frustrated.  I was unemployed for 4 months in 2019 and has a side business loss for expenses but still owe a large tax bill.  I have the TurboTax Disk so I found not eligible for TurboTax Live, I want to ensure I didn't do something incorrectly because this is over 13K owed... I need some assistance, how can I get a tax expert to review?

TurboTax Live Expert is available for TurboTax Online only, but you may want to talk to TurboTax Support.

What is the TurboTax phone number

Did you have any other income? Did you have any net premium tax credit that must be repaid? Use Forms Mode to review the calculation on your return. Look at Form 1040. Your total income will be reported on line 7b. Adjustments, such as a business loss from Schedule C, will end up on line 8a. Your AGI is on line 8b. From there, you have deductions on line 9 and possibly line 10 that resulting in your taxable income on line 11b. This is the dollar amount in which your tax liability is calculated.

If applicable, review Schedule 2. There may be repayment of tax credits or additional taxes due on your return.

We cannot see your return through this forum. However, one way to feel confident is to compare your previous tax return with the current year. The format of the 1040 has changed from 2018 to 2019, so you cannot compare line numbers. Be sure to review by line description. Some important lines to consider are total income, taxable income, tax due, total payments, and refund or balance due. This will give you an idea of whether or not you may have left out anything before you file.

Also, take into consideration any job changes, life changes (marriage, new home, dependents, etc.) that may affect your return. Consider whether or not you have included all sources of income on your return, such as W2's, interest, dividends, or any income from self-employment. Review the Deductions & Credits section of TurboTax to make sure you have taken advantage of all potential tax breaks. Finally, be sure to run the review on the return to look for any potential errors.
