Question

Use of 1040-SR

TurboTax prints out my2020 Form 1040 on a Form 1040-SR and claims an itemized deduction (as opposed to the standard deduction).  My understanding is that if Form 1040-SR is used, the standard deduction has to be claimed.  However, as pointed out, my TurboTax 1040-SR shows my itemized deductions.  Please explain.

A 1040SR and 1040 are exactally the same.  Only the *paper* 1040SR is printed in a larger type face for older taxpayers over 65.    That has nothing to do with deductions.

The Only difference between the Form 1040 and the Form 1040-SR is the typeface, larger type on the 1040-SR.  Nothing else.

If your itemized deductions are greater than the standard deduction for your filing status then itemized deductions will be used.
