volunteer training

My wife and i are in a training program to become volunteer laydeacons in our church. we pay all tuition and book fees. can i deduct the cost of the volunteer training and if so where?

    It depends, let me give you the details.

     

    If the church is a qualified tax-exempt organization, 501c3, then you will have some deductions available.  You can deduct: 

    • miles driven on your personal vehicle for charitable purposes.
    • supplies and materials purchased specifically for your volunteer work - books, uniforms, etc
    • other expenses may be deductible if necessary for your volunteer activities.

    Qualified deductions are entered: 

    1. Open return to federal
    2. Under  deductions and credits 
    3. Under charitable donations. 
    4. Select Donations to Charity in 2024.
