w-4 step 3 can I claim additional credits without children

Last year twice the amount of tax was withheld from my paycheck. I'd like to adjust my w-4 this year by increasing the credit amount in step 3, but I don't have any qualifying dependents. Can I still claim "other credits"?

Yes, you can.

In step 3, you can list credits for dependents AND other credits. If you deem that you are eligible for other credits such as education credits, solar credits, Electric vehicle credit, earned income credit, you can list their amounts here.

But remember that if you overestimate these credits and do not have enough taxes withheld, you may have to pay a penalty for underpayment.
