Question

Was I double-taxed?

I live in South Carolina and work for a company based out of Virginia.  My company had my residence incorrectly set to Virginia until around 4 months into the year.  I paid state taxes to Virginia for the 1st quarter and to South Carolina for the rest of the year.  Is there a way to know on my W-2 (or elsewhere) if I also paid state taxes to South Carolina for the 1st quarter or to Virginia for the rest of the year?

Thanks!

You have to ask your payroll department. If you live in SC, you owe taxes on the full amount and get a credit for the tax paid to VA as a nonresident. You get credit for the lower state tax on the lowest taxable amount.

    • Each state calculates taxable income differently.
    • Each state has its own tax rate/ system.
    • You get the lowest of both categories as a tax credit.

@morgan_2me I think what you are stating is that your employer withheld VA tax for a few months.

You will need to file a non-resident VA tax return to get those withholdings back.

You will file a SC tax return since you worked and lived in SC for the entire year.  All your income gets reported to SC.
