Question

We began the adoption process in 2016 but have not yet been placed with a child. Can we claim adoption expenses paid in 2016 on our 2017 return?

Yes, you can get the adoption credit in the year the adoption is finalized or otherwise, you take the credit only for expenses from 2016.

When I try to claim adoption expenses paid in 2016, turbotax does not give me the credit unless I enter at least a name for the new child but NO CHILD EXISTS YET.  Why is this?  Are we not eligible for the credit until we are placed with a child?
