Question

We contributed $3700 total to our 2 kids Oregon College savings plans. Our credit is 185. I thought it would be the max of $360. Is it $3600 to each child to get the max?

Here's a chart to show how much you need to pay to the Oregon College Savings Plan to get the most tax credit based on your income based on married filing joint status.

    • Less than $30k: $360 contribution
    • $30,001 - $70k: $720 contribution
    • $70,001 - $100k: $1,440 contribution
    • $100,001 - $250k: $3,600 contribution
    • More than $250k: $7,200 contribution

See full grid at this link: Oregon College Savings Plan

If you and your spouse made more than $250k and are married filing jointly, you need to contribute $7,200 to get the maximum tax credit of $360. You've already contributed $3,700, so you would need to add $3,500 more.
