Question

We did not have a HDHP, but do have an HSA. How can I take that off of my page for TT to ask me to fill out?

I did not have a HDHP. Why am I being asked to answer questions about it?

You have an HSA. Did you take any distributions out of it in 2024? If so, then you have to complete the HSA interview to add the 8889.

If you didn't contribute anything to the HSA (without HDHP, you should not have) and didn't take anything out, then you don't need to report the 8889.

The way to avoid this is to NOT check that you have an HSA on the screen that asks what sort of health-related accounts you had.

If you did take money out of the HSA in 2024, you will need to do the HSA interview, but when you are asked if you had HDHP coverage at any time in 2024, just answer No. You will go through the rest of the HSA to be able to enter the 1099-SA(s).

If you have either withdrawals or contributions, you must complete the entire interview and include form 8889.  Withdrawals are taxable unless you certify they were used for medical expenses.  If you made contributions and don't have an HDHP, you will be penalized unless you take steps to fix that.
