Question

We put all new windows in my office to make it easier to control temps in the office. Can I claim this as a deduction since I work from home?

Are you a W-2 employee?

Can I deduct job-related expenses on my tax return?

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

If it is your main home, you may qualify for an energy credit. See Instructions for Form 5695. The rules are changing for 2023 with an increased limit of $1200 annually.  However, this credit is limited for 2022 as follows.

  • A total combined credit limit of $500 for all tax years after 2005.
  • A combined credit limit of $200 for windows for all tax years after 2005.
