Question

We sold our house and had to vacate. We had great difficulty finding and purchasing a new home. Can we claim the hotel expenses?

We had to stay at a Residence Inn for six weeks while trying to buy a house despite being pre-qualified, having a 33% cash down payment and having an 850 credit score.  Can we claim this expense?

No.   The expenses of moving were eliminated as a deduction on your federal return for everyone except certain active duty members of the military by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your hotel expenses were your own personal expenses.  Sorry.
