What counts as tax deductible medical expenses?

I am registered as a sole proprietory with a DBA. I work part-time as a deli trainer/kitchen staff associate and then also as a freelance music producer. Handling both jobs put a toll on my body physically. I started getting massages and also am now going to a chiropractor periodically to realign my body, and I'm wondering if I can write off that expense as a business expense? If not, how can I claim it on my taxes?

The chiropractic unreimbursed cost is a medical expense if you itemize. Massage cost would need a letter from a medical provider prescribing the treatment for a medical condition. Only an amount of all medical expenses greater than 7.5 percent of your AGI can be deducted. Your total itemized deductions would have to be greater than your standard deduction to be beneficial.

Deductible medical expenses are expenses to diagnose, treat or cure a disease or condition that affects the natural function of the body or mind.  Expenses that are of general health benefit are not deductible.

Chiropractic services are allowed, provided the chiropractor is treating a disease or condition affecting the natural function of the body, and not just for general health benefits.  Massage is more of a problem, it would have to be prescribed by your doctor or chiropractor to treat a specific disease or condition.

Medical expenses can only be claimed as part of your personal itemized deductions. They cannot be deducted as business expenses.
