Enter the amount of outstanding mortgage principal as of December 31, 2020. You can find the amount in Box 2 of Form 1098 or on your last mortgage interest statement.

Income taxes are based on a calendar year (January-December) so if your refinancing was finalized on January 6, 2021, you still had your old mortgage balance at the end of 2020.

You should receive two 1098 - Mortgage Interest Statement forms for 2020. One from the old lender. One from the new lender.

Enter the 1098 from the old lender first. Your outstanding mortgage balance will be the balance shown in box 2 of that form.

Enter the 1098 from the new lender last, and make sure you select the checkbox to indicate that this *IS* a refinance. Then when asked for outstanding balance on the new loan, you'll enter the amount in box 2 of the 1098 from the new lender.
